Cairo — Egyptian Museum, Giza & Islamic Cairo

The Egyptian Museum and the Giza plateau, guided properly.

Cairo is a different country from Luxor. It has twenty million people, five thousand years of layered history, and the greatest collection of ancient Egyptian artifacts anywhere on earth. It is not a quiet city and it is not designed for casual navigation. But the Egyptian Museum rewards sustained attention in a way that few institutions anywhere in the world can match.

I have been sending clients to Cairo for seven years. The guide I work with there — a licensed Egyptologist who graduated from Cairo University — has spent a decade inside the Egyptian Museum and knows the Tutankhamun galleries as I know the Karnak hypogeum. The difference between a two-hour self-guided visit and a four-hour guided visit to the same rooms is the difference between seeing objects and understanding them.

For the Giza plateau: the pyramids are extraordinary even when you have seen photographs your whole life. Standing at the base of Khufu's pyramid and understanding the engineering decisions, the quarrying logistics, the religious intent behind the orientation — that is a different experience from reading about it. The astronomical precision of the Sphinx orientation, the alignment of the causeways, the deliberate placement of the three complexes in relation to each other: none of this is obvious without someone who has studied it.

Common questions

How many days should I spend in Cairo?
Two full days covers the Egyptian Museum (including the Tutankhamun galleries) and the Giza plateau properly. Three days adds Islamic Cairo and allows a more relaxed pace. I do not recommend a day trip from Luxor — the distances and the volume of content make it unsatisfying.
What is the difference between the Egyptian Museum and the Grand Egyptian Museum?
The Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square holds the current Tutankhamun collection and three thousand years of artifacts organized by dynasty. The Grand Egyptian Museum at Giza is partially open and will eventually house the full Tutankhamun collection in a new purpose-built building. Depending on the current state of the transfer, we plan both visits to see the best of what is available.
Can I go inside the pyramids?
Yes — the interior of Khufu's pyramid is accessible to a limited number of tickets per day. The Grand Gallery is architecturally unlike anything else in the complex. I book that ticket in advance if you want to go inside.
Is Giza safe?
Yes. Giza plateau has a significant tourist police presence and is one of the most-visited sites in Egypt. The persistent vendors outside the ticketing area can be assertive — a guide manages that interaction so you do not have to.
What is your role for a Cairo visit?
I arrange everything: flights from Luxor (or airport pickup if you arrive directly), hotel, and a guide I trust who has spent years inside the Egyptian Museum. I stay in contact with you by WhatsApp throughout. I am not physically present in Cairo, but I am one call away.
Do I need a visa before arriving in Egypt?
Most Western nationalities qualify for an e-Visa applied for online before departure, or a visa on arrival. I offer visa assistance — see the visa concierge page for details.
