Hurghada & the Red Sea

Reef diving, snorkeling, and private yacht charters through an operator I trust personally.

The Red Sea is a different Egypt from Luxor. Four hours east by car, the landscape shifts from cultivated Nile valley to fractured granite desert, and then the sea appears — a colour of blue that is difficult to describe accurately to someone who has not seen it.

The northern Red Sea has some of the healthiest coral reef systems in the world. The reefs here survived better than many tropical systems because the water depth drops sharply from the shore, protecting the reef flat from the damage that afflicts shallower environments. Visibility frequently reaches twenty meters in calm conditions. The marine life — reef sharks, Napoleon wrasse, moray eels, schools of glassfish, spinner dolphins at certain sites — is genuinely extraordinary.

I arrange Red Sea visits through a small operator I have vetted personally over several years. This is not the largest dive company on the strip. They run smaller boats, have more experienced dive masters, and are willing to plan a day around what you actually want to see rather than the standard rotation. That difference matters when you are trusting someone with your safety underwater.

Common questions

Do I need to be a certified diver to enjoy the Red Sea?
Not at all. Snorkeling on the reef flat at the Giftun Islands is excellent — good visibility, healthy coral, and abundant marine life at shallow depth. For those who want to go underwater without certification, an introductory dive with a dive master is also a serious option. Certified divers have access to the full range of sites and depths.
What is the best time of year to visit Hurghada?
October through April is ideal — mild temperatures, reliable wind for sailing, good visibility underwater. May through September is hot on land but the diving is still excellent; I recommend early morning departures to avoid the midday heat.
How far is Hurghada from Luxor?
Approximately four hours by car across the Eastern Desert, or 45 minutes by domestic flight. The drive is scenic in its own right — the transition from the Nile valley to the Red Sea hills is genuinely interesting. I arrange whichever transfer fits the itinerary.
What operator do you use for diving?
I work with a small operator I have vetted personally over several years — not the largest company on the strip, but the one that treats a private group properly and has experienced dive masters who know the local sites well.
Can I combine Hurghada with Luxor?
Yes — this is the most common arrangement. Luxor for the archaeological sites, then two or three days at the Red Sea as a counterpoint. I design the sequence so the logistics flow naturally between the two.
What should I bring for a Red Sea day?
Sunscreen (reef-safe is required on the boat — standard chemical sunscreen damages the coral), a hat, water, and a change of dry clothes. If you have a mask that fits well, bring it — the sensation of breathing underwater is much easier when your mask is not leaking. All diving equipment is provided.
